If you’ve ever felt a gentle breeze on your
cheek, you’ve met Mori. For sure.
As the newly-appointed Guardian of the Bees, Mori is still getting to
know the heart of the forest and the hollows in tree trunks and the
pathways down rabbit holes.
The privilege, and responsibility, isn’t something new, however — it has
been passed down in her family for generations.
But Mori isn’t about to take things for granted.
After all, even those born with wings have to learn how to fly, and fly
well.

Designing the face
Eye indentations (please refer to the sample tutorial to the left)
- With a darning needle, bring the remaining yarn from the bottom of the head
through to the left side of the head, positioning it at a stitch, off-center, below
Round 18. - Make one horizontal stitch and bring the thread back down to the bottom of the
head. Gently tug on the yarn to create a slight indentation. - Now repeat the above on the right side of the head — there should be 7 stitches in
between the indentations. - Repeat instructions 1-3 to make another indentation next to the indentations you
made earlier — this means that there should be two indentations, side by side, on
each side of the face. Do not cut off excess yarn yet. You may use your thumbs to
gently add pressure to deepen the indentations.
Nose - With the same needle and yarn, bring the yarn back up to the center of the head
below Round 18 between the eye indentations. - Pull it taut and loop the yarn 4 times around the needle. While holding the loops
firmly, pull the needle through. What you’ll get is a small French knot. - Bring the knotted yarn into the stitch next to it and gently pull it through to the
bottom of the head. Trim excess yarn.
** You may also use a new strand of yarn to create the eye indentations and the nose.
Eyes, Brows & Lips - Cut out one small half-moon of white felt to match the brad that you’re using for
the eye. Glue it near the left eye indentation. Add glue onto the blue brad and pop
it into the stitch with one of the indentations.. - The eyebrow is made with black
sewing thread — make one
diagonal backstitch (3 stitches
long) from below Round 15 to
16, positioning it above each
eye. - You may knot the ends at the
bottom of the head (the area
will be covered when you attach
the body) so that it will not
easily come off later. - For the lips, make one small
vertical backstitch with black
sewing thread on Round 21,
centered beneath the nose.

Hood
**Before you begin, you need to make sure that you’ve completed
glueing on the eyes and finished sewing on the nose, eyebrows,
cheeks and mouth onto the head piece.
** You will also need the two hair pieces — attach these (with a slight
gap in between) onto the top-centre of the head, with the ends of the
bangs ending at Round 14 or 15 (with backstitches on the upper part
of the hair).
With dk-weight black yarn and sparkly black yarn (holding both
strands together) & 4mm hook:
Repeat instructions for Round 1-8 of the head.
Continue with the below:
Rounds 9-18 (10 rounds altogether): Sc around {48}.
Stuff the head piece you made earlier into this hood piece.
Round 19: [Inv dec, sc 6] around {42}.
Round 20: [Inv dec, sc 5] around {36}.
Clean fasten off. You can leave as is or make small backstitches to
secure the hood to the head.
** Tips for making the hood: Depending on the weight/thickness of
yarn that you’re using, you may need to reduce/increase the
increasing rounds so that the hood piece would fit snugly over the
head. One way to check is to hold the piece over the top of the head;
if the diameter matches then you can stop increasing.
